Table 2 Nucleotide sequences of primate lysozymes. The amino acid
sequence of the mature human lysozyme protein is shown on the top line
in the three-letter code; its DNA sequence is shown below, divided
into codons. Sequences of the other primate lysozymes (species
binomial abbreviations are in Table 1) are shown only where they
differ from the human sequence; dots indicate identities to the human
sequence. Those nucleotides in capital letters are nonsynonymous
differences, and those in small letters are synonymous differences,
when compared to the human sequence. For each species, we sequenced
the entire coding region, although only the mature region is shown.
The mature coding region of chimpanzee (Ptr), bonobo (Ppa) and the
least derived gorilla allele (Ggo) were identical to the nucleotide,
so are listed on one line; the same is true for other lines with more
than one species abbreviation. Only in gorilla and orangutan did we
find allelic differences (G. Maston and C.-B. S., in preparation); the
less derived alleles are shown here.
