NAME
Latin1 - Source code filter for Latin-1 script (Imitation JPerl)
SYNOPSIS
In your script:
use Latin1;
At command prompt:
perl yourscript.pl wild* *card and '*quote*' on MSWin32
DESCRIPTION
This software is "JPerl on the Modern Perl" written by Perl.
To our regret, the Sjis software family cannot treat Latin-1 up to now.
This software can supplement those weak points. We can write the script
in Latin-1 again.
This software treats Latin-1 directly. Therefore, there is not UTF8 flag.
INSTALLATION BY MAKE (for UNIX like system)
To install this software by make, type the following:
perl Makefile.PL
make
make test
make install
INSTALLATION WITHOUT MAKE (for DOS like system)
To install this software without make, type the following:
perl pMakefile.PL --- pMakefile.PL makes "pmake.bat" only, and ...
pmake.bat
pmake.bat test
pmake.bat install --- install to current using Perl
pmake.bat dist --- make distribution package
pmake.bat ptar.bat --- make perl script "ptar.bat"

ISO/IEC 8859 is a joint ISO and IEC series of standards for 8-bit character
encodings. The series of standards consists of numbered parts, such as
ISO/IEC 8859-1, ISO/IEC 8859-2, etc. There are 15 parts, excluding the
abandoned ISO/IEC 8859-12.
ISO/IEC 8859 parts 1, 2, 3, and 4 were originally Ecma International standard
ECMA-94.
Part 1: Latin-1 Western European
Perhaps the most widely used part of ISO/IEC 8859, covering most Western
European languages: Danish (partial), Dutch (partial), English, Faeroese,
Finnish (partial), French (partial), German, Icelandic, Irish, Italian,
Norwegian, Portuguese, Rhaeto-Romanic, Scottish Gaelic, Spanish, and
Swedish. Languages from other parts of the world are also covered, including:
Eastern European Albanian, Southeast Asian Indonesian, as well as the
African languages Afrikaans and Swahili. The missing euro sign and capital
letter y with diaeresis are in the revised version ISO/IEC 8859-15.
The corresponding IANA character set ISO-8859-1 is the default encoding for
legacy HTML documents and for documents transmitted via MIME messages, such
as HTTP responses when the document's media type is "text"(as in "text/html").
* ALGORITHM #1
When the character is taken out of the octet string, it is necessary to
distinguish a single octet character and the multiple octet character.
The distinction is done only by first octet.
Single octet code is:
0x00-0xFF

* ALGORITHM #2
Against algorithm.1, when the range of the character by tr/// is specified, only the
following character codes are effective.
Single octet code is:
0x00-0xFF
